To the Reader:
Welcome to the WhatsUpJayTee Direct Care Staff Training site that will help you learn the basic skills and information to become a direct care staff person.
The quality of any care services or community-based programs are equal to the abilities of those individuals providing direct care or intervention for consumers. Good intentions will never supersede the need for an underlying understanding of the complex nature of providing that care.
Are you currently working in a non-profit or for-profit personal assistance or habilitation program? Or thinking of applying for a position?

My name is Jackie. Over the past 18 years I have wrestled with the administrative challenge and the direct care in almost every capacity time and time again. I have done everything from working in Dayhabs to group homes. Working with a variety of companies doing some type of direct care, I often found myself starting from scratch in the process of gathering and disseminating information in order to work comfortably without or very little training meaning no matter what capacity I have worked that direct care staff has very little resource readily available in the group homes.
It became apparent that many training was/is not the core of many, many Providers.
I decided three years ago to start journaling my experiences in this field and in doing this I departed a job and for that moment I had to figure out income sources so looking for a job of course was at the top of the list. My journaling pattern switched up a bit. I applied at a group home here in Texas and the outcome was appalling, of course journaling this sort of experience was different and red flags had become more prevalent. I went into this company only to pick up the application, fill it out at home and returned it later. When I entered the partition filled room with voices around me, a lady ask if “I could fill the application out there and do the interview”. I replied of course! Once the interview was over, she concluded it with I will get back with you. One week later, this same company called and asked if I could be at one of their group homes in 20 minutes to work. Mind you, I had no training specifically for them, no knowledge of what to expect from both staff and most importantly the consumers. The shocking experience with that company along with journaling, and my direct care staff experience both good and bad brought me to this point. To build a site for reference, training and most importantly resources.
